Pony beaded  'tail' dress

The 12 X 46 inch wide sinew sewn pony beaded yoke flows around the deer tail which becomes the focal point of the dress as a natural decoration. The pony beads are magnificent white and black with large red vertical designs. This dress is made from two large deer skins with the neck, legs and tail parts left on. The deer tails with the hair clipped short were kept on and used as a natural decoration in conjunction with pony beads across the front and back of this dress which has strong Blackfoot influence. The use of these dresses became popular in the 1840’s across the Northern Plains along the route where horses spread from the southwest, horses became the major export product among the Northern Plains tribes.

Nez Perce

Beaded cradle 1870's

With a huge beaded panel with a large geometric hour glass design which has Crow influence. The hood of the cradle is equally exceptional using green, red and blue trade cloth together in an intricate saw-tooth design with beaded crosses on either side. In remarkably fresh condition with long fringe at the top, the hide is supple and the cradle has been well cared for. Most importantly it has a large and bold bead work design on the headboard that is truly outstanding and makes this one of the finest Nez Perce baby cradles known to exist. Absolutely superb. (Height 36 inches, width of headboard 14 inches, fringe 11 inches)
