Two Strike

He
was
born in 1832 and in his early teens became one of the outstanding warriors of
the Brule Sioux. He participated in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He became
a close associate of Spotted Tail and accompanied him as his advisor to Washington
in 1872.
In
1893, he negotiated peace terms with the Crow Indians of Montana and was presented
with a gift of 176 horses for his efforts.
During
his long life he tried to understand the white man's ways and to adopt those
which he considered useful to his people. He took a personal interest in the
education of Indian youth and visited the Carlisle
Indian School when it first opened to Sioux children.
During
the Ghost Dance in 1890-91, he was one of those who led a number of Brule from
Rosebud to the Messiah stronghold in the Badlands.
As a matter of interest, a meeting was held in 1923 at the Two Strike village on the Rosebud Reservation in an attempt to bring court action against the sale of the Black Hills.
Two Strike died in 1915.
